KOTA BHARU – Former Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department P. Waytha Moorthy has moved closer to Pas and the opposition bloc due to a shared political objective which is to challenge the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Pas vice-president Datuk Mohd Amar Abdullah said Waytha reached out to the party on his own initiative, not through an invitation, after recognising a common stance in rejecting the current government.

“He (Waytha) is the one moving closer to us (Pas), let’s be clear on that. The reason he’s with us is because we are against the current government.

“In other words, everyone wants to bring down Anwar as Prime Minister, so our objective is the same. That’s what attracted him to us, not because we asked him to come,” he told Sinar.

He added that there have been no formal discussions with Waytha regarding any structured collaboration.

Waytha’s recent engagement with opposition parties has sparked public debate, especially considering his previous role in promoting the ratification of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD), which was widely opposed at the time.

He was also recently reported to have filed a legal challenge seeking a court declaration that Anwar’s appointment as Prime Minister in 2022 was unconstitutional, null and void. The application was filed through law firm Karthig Shan & Co with Anwar named as the sole respondent.

Perikatan Nasional has since denied any connection to the legal action, with its chief whip, Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan, clarifying that Waytha acted in his personal capacity.
