Sanusi declines nomination for PAS vice-presidency

PETALING JAYA: Kedah menteri besar Sanusi Nor has confirmed that he will not be contesting for a PAS vice-president post in the party elections next month.

According to Utusan Malaysia, Sanusi said he would only defend his position as a member of the PAS central leadership committee for the 2025-2027 term.

“I will not contest the vice-president post, only the central leadership committee member position,” he told reporters when met at the Merdeka Boat Parade in conjunction with the Merdeka Day celebrations in Alor Setar today.

However, he did not elaborate on his reasons for turning down his nomination for the party vice-presidency.

Yesterday, FMT quoted a source as saying that Sanusi was widely expected to turn down delegates’ nomination for him to contest the PAS vice-presidency next month.

It is understood that candidates with sufficient nominations from delegates had to confirm with the PAS election committee whether they wanted to throw their hats into the ring before 5pm yesterday.

A source close to Sanusi said the two-term menteri besar might opt to vie only for a spot on the PAS central leadership committee as he had obtained the highest number of votes two years ago.

The source also said Sanusi did not want to challenge the three incumbents – Idris Ahmad, Amar Abdullah and Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar – as they had done well as party veeps.

The PAS election committee had announced that there were four candidates eligible to contest for the party’s vice-president posts: Sanusi, Samsuri, Idris and Amar.

Sanusi, the Islamic party’s election director, has garnered a huge following in PAS, with its spiritual leader Hashim Jasin also expressing support for the Jeneri assemblyman’s nomination.

However, Sanusi said last month that he was not ready to take up the post as there were others more qualified for the role.

He had also declined to contest the PAS vice-presidency at the party’s last internal polls in 2023.
