Make peace and move on, Zahid tells feuding Umno duo

PETALING JAYA: Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has urged party veteran Tajuddin Abdul Rahman and his divisional successor, Khairul Azwan Harun, to put aside their feud which has been going on since 2023.

Zahid said the dispute between the duo, which stems from Khairul accusing Tajuddin of sabotaging Umno’s campaign in the 2022 general election (GE15), only weakened the party.

He said cooperation was necessary to ensure political stability and development for the people of Pasir Salak, the parliamentary constituency which Tajuddin had represented for three terms until 2022.

“Whatever that has happened is in the past. Let’s traverse on new paths. We can achieve victory with cooperation,” Sinar Harian quoted Zahid, the Barisan Nasional chairman, as saying.

“I will ensure that both of them make peace so we can regain the parliamentary and state seats in Pasir Salak.”

Umno suspended Tajuddin several months before GE15 after he publicly criticised Zahid.

The party fielded Khairul instead in Pasir Salak, but he lost to PAS’s Jamaludin Yahya by 5,003 votes, marking the first time that the Perak seat had fallen out of Umno’s hands.

The Sungai Manik and Kampong Gajah state seats were also won by PAS in GE15.

Khairul, now the Pasir Salak Umno chief, had accused Tajuddin of sabotaging his election campaign. The Umno veteran denied this and demanded that Khairul apologise.

Khairul had also urged Umno against accepting Tajuddin’s appeal against his suspension, claiming the former Pasir Salak Umno head was still openly critical of the leadership.

Umno lifted Tajuddin’s suspension in November.
