SHAH ALAM: Amanah has lodged a police report against a social media post by PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari, claiming it can damage Malaysia’s diplomatic relations and provoke extremism.

Abbas Azmi, the director of Amanah’s mobilisation bureau, warned that the cartoon could insult Malaysia’s regional partners and undermine the role of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Malaysia as Asean chair.

“We had just seen a ceasefire negotiated successfully, then came this post. Is this how we reward progress?” Abbas told a press conference outside the Shah Alam police headquarters today.

Earlier, several representatives from the Amanah bureau entered the police headquarters to file the report over Fadhli’s posting.

“This police report is crucial, and we urge an investigation to be carried out under the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998,” Abbas said.

The post in question featured a caricature of a monkey acting as a judge between a goat and a sheep fighting over bananas, an imagery, he said, that mocked Anwar’s effort to negotiate a ceasefire in the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia.

Yesterday, Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan and PKR Youth chief Kamil Munim said Fadhli should apologise to the people of Cambodia and Thailand over the posting.

Several Pakatan Harapan MPs have also lodged police reports at the Dang Wangi police headquarters over the matter.

Fadhli, who is the Pasir Mas MP, has refused to apologise over the now-deleted social media post, saying he would leave the matter to the police following the reports lodged.

A ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand took effect at midnight on Monday, ending five days of intense border fighting that left at least 38 people dead and displaced more than 300,000.

The agreement was reached after Malaysia, as Asean chair, along with the US and China, brought both sides to the table for peace talks in Putrajaya.
