2 more Bersatu leaders released after remand bid rejected

PETALING JAYA: Two Bersatu leaders arrested in connection with the anti-Anwar Ibrahim rally on Saturday were released from police custody this morning, the party has revealed.
Furqan Hakimi, who serves as the executive secretary of Bersatu Youth’s Perak chapter, and acting Ayer Hitam chief Syafiq Aziz were arrested yesterday.

According to Bersatu Youth information chief Harris Idaham, the application by the police to have the duo remanded for four days was rejected by the Kuala Lumpur magistrates’ court.

Their release comes a day after that of Bersatu leader Badrul Hisham Shaharin and Sijangkang PAS Youth chief Ikhwan Syaffiq.
“The decision by two magistrates to reject the remand applications proves that police do not have a valid reason to remand these individuals,” Harris said in a statement.

He also described the release of the Bersatu members as a “win” for the people.
“We plead with the authorities to put an end to this form of political intimidation,” he added.
The arrests were criticised yesterday by Bersatu Youth chief Hilman Idham, who said police only need to summon individuals if their statements are required.
