PH youths among 70 in protest outside US embassy

KUALA LUMPUR: More than 70 demonstrators, a majority of whom were Pakatan Harapan Youth members, gathered outside the US embassy this afternoon to protest against the nomination of Nick Adams as the next US ambassador to Malaysia.

They began gathering near the embassy at about 2.30pm despite the scorching heat, before several representatives submitted a memorandum to an officer at the embassy.

Policemen stood by at the scene.

The participants, some of whom donned the Palestinian keffiyeh, were heard chanting slogans like “Reject Nick Adams”, and “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free”.

PKR Youth deputy chief Izuan Kasim said Adams’s values and views clashed with those of Malaysia’s, particularly on the country’s stance on Palestine.

He accused Adams of being an Islamophobe, misogynist, and pro-Israel.

“These are the three main reasons we reject him to be the next ambassador,” he told reporters after submitting the memorandum.

The memorandum urged the US to withdraw Adams’s nomination and appoint a candidate who is sensitive to Malaysia’s cultural norms.

DAP Youth vice-chief Iskandar Fareez called on the US to consider nominating a career diplomat to Malaysia who can improve bilateral ties between the two nations.

“One of Adams’s statements is that if you don’t stand with Israel, you are standing with the terrorists. This is clearly against what we believe in Malaysia. How can we have dialogue with someone that carries himself in such a reckless way?
