Umno Youth demands prompt action on Najib’s house arrest order

PETALING JAYA: Umno Youth has called for the royal addendum allowing former Umno president Najib Razak to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest to be implemented immediately.

In a statement, Umno Youth said it is of the view that once the addendum’s existence had been confirmed, the former prime minister must be allowed to serve the remainder of his jail sentence “without further excuses”.

“As we have previously stated, the refusal to implement this addendum is an insult to the monarchy, which is the cornerstone of the nation’s Constitution,” it said.

The Federal Court was told on Wednesday that Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar had acknowledged the existence of the addendum but was disputing whether it was genuine or valid.

Najib wants the government to implement the order, dated Jan 29 last year, allowing him to serve the remainder of his jail sentence in the SRC International case under house arrest.

The former prime minister learned about the addendum soon after the Federal Territories Pardons Board announced in early February last year that his 12-year jail term had been halved and his RM210 million fine reduced to RM50 million.

Yesterday, Umno called for the king to allow Najib to serve the rest of his sentence under house arrest following the attorney-general’s confirmation of the addendum.

In its statement today, Umno Youth also criticised Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng for questioning Umno’s push for Najib to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest, which the DAP lawmaker described as “unreasonable.”

Umno Youth stated that Lim should recognise their proposal is grounded in the attorney-general’s acknowledgment of the addendum in court, and not driven by political motives or personal agendas.
