PMO’s daily briefings no replacement for Fahmi, says aide
The prime minister’s senior press secretary said the daily briefings will not supersede the role of communications minister Fahmi Fadzil as government spokesman.

PETALING JAYA: The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) today said that its daily briefings are not a replacement for the role of government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil.

In a broadcast on Facebook this morning, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s senior press secretary Tunku Nashrul Abaidah said the PMO’s daily briefings were part of a “more thorough communication strategy”.

“The daily briefings focus on the prime minister’s work, as well as his response to pressing current issues and orders to ministries and agencies to ensure that the government’s policies are implemented in an orderly and effective manner.

“Fahmi’s role as the Madani government spokesman is to clarify issues and answer questions involving government policies, as well as decisions made at Cabinet meetings.

“The daily briefings are not a replacement for the government spokesman, but serve to complete and strengthen the government’s communications structure,” he said.

On Saturday, Tunku Nashrul said the daily briefings would ensure that the public receives accurate and credible information directly from official sources.

“This is an important step in countering the spread of slander and misleading fake information within society.

“This initiative is in line with the Madani concept, which upholds transparency between the administration and the public,” he said.

Following the announcement, PAS member Nurul Islam Yusoff called to sack Fahmi as communications minister.

“Isn’t this Fahmi’s job in his capacity as the government’s spokesman?

“The PMO is already handling too many things. It handles the finance ministry, legal affairs, Islamic affairs, and even the rice supply issue. Now it’s going to handle communications too.

“What is Fahmi doing? If he is such a failure, just sack him,” Malaysiakini reported him as saying in a Facebook post, adding that Fahmi is the person tasked to answer questions on behalf of the government.

Nurul Islam said the community communications department under Fahmi’s ministry receives an allocation of RM13.58 million annually with 155 employees.

“With all the resources at his disposal, don’t tell me the PMO still has to do his job?”
