PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is still investigating the case involving a prominent politician linked to a safe house where RM5 million was stored, the Dewan Rakyat was told yesterday.

Law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said said MACC had completed its probe, but that the investigation paper was returned by the deputy public prosecutor for further action.

“MACC is in the midst of carrying out the order,” she said in a written parliamentary reply.

She added that the law forbade her from going into detail about the case until the perpetrator is charged in court.

Azalina was responding to Wong Chen (PH-Subang) who had asked about the delay in charging those involved in the case.

MACC said last October that one of the suspects arrested in the investigation had revealed that a safe house was being used to store the proceeds of corruption – some S$1,529,000. The funds were subsequently seized by the authorities.

The politician was believed to have ordered a businessman to store the money, given by an unidentified individual, at the apartment in Kuala Lumpur.

The money was kept for the politician to use in his political activities, a MACC source revealed.

Sinar Harian reported that a former senior executive of Menteri Besar Selangor Incorporated was one of two individuals arrested by MACC in an investigation into a sand mining concession granted by a subsidiary of the state investment arm.

The former executive and the second suspect, a businessman, were allegedly linked to a prominent opposition leader who used to have political influence in Selangor.

Responding to a supplementary question by Wong about a time frame for the suspects to be charged in court, Azalina said none had been set.

She added that no time frame had been set for the completion of the probe.

“The time needed to complete the investigation and submit the findings to the deputy public prosecutor depends on the complexity of the case,” she said.
