PETALING JAYA: Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan do not have enough support from voters in Kedah to topple the state government led by Sanusi Nor, says a state Umno leader.

Kedah Umno information chief Shaiful Hazizy Zainol Abidin said there may have been some increase in support for his party recently but it won’t be enough to make a difference to the outcome of the next state polls.

He also attributed the lower voter support in the last state polls in August 2023 to his party’s cooperation with PH since the last general election (GE15) in November 2022.

“There has been some improvement (with Umno members and supporters returning to the fold). But many are still not satisfied. So, I think we will not be a threat to the PAS-led state government.

“Nevertheless, Umno is optimistic they will eventually understand and abide by the party’s decisions (including to work with PH),” he told FMT.

Shaiful said though his party may not have a strong chance of taking over Kedah, he remains confident they will achieve better results the next time around.

He said BN is also confident its cooperation with PH will eventually gain the confidence of voters in Kedah.

“BN will take a people-friendly and services-based approach. We will not play the street politics practised by Perikatan Nasional,” he added.

On Feb 11, PH secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said PH and BN are preparing themselves as the “government in waiting” in Kedah ahead of the next polls.

He said this after being elected as Kedah PH chairman effective Feb 7, replacing Mahfuz Omar who held the position since 2022.

PN formed the Kedah government after the last state polls, in which the coalition won 33 state seats, with PAS taking 21, Bersatu 11 and Gerakan one.

PH won only three seats, with PKR taking two and DAP one.
