PKR man mocks PN over split views on snap polls

PETALING JAYA: A PKR leader has mocked Perikatan Nasional (PN) after differing views on calls for a snap general election expressed by leaders of coalition components Bersatu and PAS.

Johor PKR vice-chief Jimmy Puah said Bersatu’s preparation for a snap election was a gimmick to give its supporters false hope about the possibility of PN governing the country.

The Tebrau MP also said that Bersatu and PAS were clearly out of sync on the topic, reflecting cold ties between the key PN components.

“This snap election gimmick stirred up by Bersatu is merely to give their supporters some false hope, to make PN appear relevant as a government-in-waiting.

“When the time comes for them to determine their prime minister candidate, it’s highly likely that they will descend into squabbles,” he said in a statement.

Last week, Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali said party president Muhyiddin Yassin had called for Bersatu’s machinery to be mobilised in preparation for a potential snap election at the end of the year.

However, a source in PAS told FMT his party was unlikely to follow its ally’s lead by preparing for a snap election.

The PAS leader who declined to be named said PAS was “not too hyped up” about the 16th general election (GE16) taking place this year. He said the two PN components appeared to be working independently of each other.

PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man also discounted the likelihood of GE16 being held this year, saying he was “certain” of this.

Puah said this difference in views signalled that PN would not be able to form a stable government.
