Why rage over foreign flags when we neglect Jalur Gemilang, says MP
Bukit Bendera MP Syerleena Abdul Rashid said patriotism is not just about standing tall during the national anthem or celebrating Merdeka Day once a year.

KUALA LUMPUR: Syerleena Abdul Rashid (PH-Bukit Bendera) has questioned the stark contrast between the general neglect of the Jalur Gemilang and the “selective anger” over foreign flags displayed in the country.

Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat today, the DAP MP expressed disappointment with the people’s approach to patriotism.

“We often talk about loving Malaysia, but what do we see when we walk on the streets?

“Faded, torn and tattered Jalur Gemilang left to weather under the sun and rain. These flags, which should stand tall with pride, are instead left in shame,” she said, while holding up a faded Jalur Gemilang.

Syerleena said old, dirty and worn-out flags are still flown outside buildings, schools and government offices.

“We pass by without a second glance as if it’s normal,” she said.

In October last year, police opened an investigation into the waving of foreign flags at an international cultural event in Sentosa, Johor Bahru.

Police also investigated an event organised by the Guan Gong Cultural Association in Teluk Intan, Perak, which saw the waving of China’s flag at a parade.

Syerleena condemned the threats of violence over foreign flags in Malaysia.

“Suddenly, everyone feels their dignity is challenged. But where is that anger when our own Jalur Gemilang is treated with such neglect?” she said.

She said patriotism is not just about standing tall during the national anthem or celebrating Merdeka Day once a year.

“It’s not just about shouting ‘Saya Anak Malaysia (I am a child of Malaysia)’ on social media. Patriotism is about respect and respect begins with how we treat our national flag.

“If we cannot respect our own flag, then what are we truly fighting for?”
