PUTRAJAYA: The Federal Court has set April 17 to hear PKR’s application for leave to appeal a Court of Appeal decision which reduced its former vice-president Zuraida Kamaruddin’s liability under a bond from RM10 million to RM100,000.
PKR’s lawyer, Navpreet Singh, said the hearing is scheduled to take place virtually.
Deputy registrar Husna Dzulkifly set the hearing date at case management on Monday.
“Parties have been directed to file written submissions by April 2, and another case management session has been scheduled for April 7 to update the court on compliance,” he said.
PKR, which is led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, is seeking to reinstate the damages payable by Zuraida to RM10 million, as previously ordered by the High Court.

The party has submitted 12 questions of law to persuade the bench to hear the case on its merits.
On Dec 11 last year, a three-member Court of Appeal bench led by Justice See Mee Chun upheld the High Court’s ruling that Zuraida had breached the bond, but reduced her liability significantly.
The High Court in Kuala Lumpur ruled in favour of PKR on June 23, 2023, after Justice Akhtar Tahir held the bond to be a valid and binding contract between Zuraida and the party.
The suit was initiated in 2020 by PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail on the party’s behalf.
The party claimed that Zuraida, who was elected to represent the constituency of Ampang on a PKR ticket, had breached the bond by leaving the party to join Bersatu following the Sheraton Move.

The terms of the bond required Zuraida to pay PKR RM10 million within seven days if she resigned from the party to join another political party or became an independent candidate.
In her defence, Zuraida contended that she was forced to sign the bond with the party to be able to stand for election as a candidate in the 14th general election in 2018.
