PETALING JAYA: Sarawak-based parties can determine the state’s future without having to rely on national parties, says Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, a senior leader of the ruling Gabungan Parti Sarawak.

He said the governance of Sarawak must remain in the hands of Sarawakians without interference from political parties such as Umno, PKR, DAP and PAS.

“Sarawak does not need an external party to govern Sarawak,” he said, according to Dayak Daily.

“Our state must be led by Sarawakians, those who understand the living conditions and aspirations of our people,” said Karim, a state minister and vice-president of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu, the largest component party in GPS.

Speaking at Lambir PBB’s triennial general meeting, Karim called for unity within the party to ensure Sarawak’s long-term wellbeing and to fend off “external influences”.

“We must ensure that our leaders can see far into the future. We cannot allow outside parties to dictate the direction of our governance,” he added.

GPS, which is part of the unity government at the federal level, holds a commanding 80 seats in the 82-seat Sarawak assembly; the opposition comprises two assemblymen from Sarawak DAP.
