Bersatu MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan was referred to the Dewan Rakyat’s rights and privileges committee over his claim that court charges brought against him could be dropped if he declared support for the government.

PETALING JAYA: Bersatu MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan did not mislead the Dewan Rakyat in claiming that certain parties had offered to drop his court charges if he supported the unity government, says a parliamentary panel.

The Dewan Rakyat’s rights and privileges committee said it found that Wan Saiful had met these parties, which offered parliamentary allocations, funds to foot his late wife’s medical expenses, and help in getting his court case dropped.

The committee also said the Tasek Gelugor MP’s claim did not affect the interests of parties involved in a matter before the court, namely Wan Saiful’s trial.

However, it said the authorities should probe Wan Saiful’s claim due to possible criminal elements, and recommended that the MP file a formal report with the police, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.

“This committee is also concerned that further comments or statements concerning the matter could affect the interests of parties involved in (Wan Saiful’s trial).

“Therefore, this committee advises the Tasek Gelugor MP against making further statements on the matter,” said the committee chaired by Dewan Rakyat speaker Johari Abdul.

Wan Saiful was referred to the Dewan Rakyat’s rights and privileges committee over his claim that court charges brought against him could be dropped if he declared support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s government.

The Bersatu Supreme Council member is standing trial on money laundering and corruption charges related to the Jana Wibawa scheme.

Wan Saiful had also revealed in the Dewan Rakyat the identities of two MPs whom he claimed had attempted to influence him into supporting Anwar.

He said he met one of the MPs and two others on Jan 17, as they offered a parliamentary allocation of RM2 million, funds for his wife’s medical expenses, an unspecified token sum to cover legal fees in his ongoing court case, and the possibility of dropping the charges against him.

He claimed that another MP facilitated the introduction of an individual on Feb 26 in connection with the proposed declaration of support for the government when debating the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s address.

Law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said tabled a motion in June for Wan Saiful to be referred to the rights and privileges committee.

She said his remarks on matters currently under court consideration “could be construed as detrimental to the interests of the parties in the case”.

Azalina asked the committee to determine whether his statements were misleading and damaging to the interests of the parties in the case, and to take any action necessary.
