Sarawak entitled to prioritise own needs, says Sabah party leader
PETALING JAYA: A Sabah party leader said Sarawak is entitled to prioritise the welfare of its own people over the needs of other more backward states as suggested by Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) deputy president Kenny Chua said the former prime minister’s suggestion had irked leaders in the two Borneo states, The Borneo Post reported.
“When you have two geese that can lay golden eggs, you will take care of them so that they will continue to create wealth. You also won’t steal their golden eggs,” he was quoted as saying.
Chua said it is the federal government’s duty to support nationwide development.
He urged Mahathir to advocate for Sarawak and Sabah’s rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) instead.

Mahathir had previously called on richer states like Sarawak to share their wealth with poorer ones.
He said Sarawak, which has been supported by Putrajaya in the past, has achieved high-income status and now boasts an annual state budget of RM11 billion. In contrast, Kedah’s budget is only approximately RM700 million.
Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg, however, shot down Mahathir’s call, saying it was “unreasonable”. He said his government’s focus was on raising household incomes in the state, particularly in rural areas.
Abang Johari said Putrajaya receives the lion’s share of oil and gas revenue, while Sarawak only receives state sales tax on petroleum products from Petronas.
“However, we manage our economy well, that’s why we are able to achieve high-income status. So it’s up to the other states (to) work harder.

“While Sarawak has achieved high-income status, there are many people here whose essential needs have yet to be fulfilled.
“That’s why the Sarawak government’s focus right now is on developing our villages, not the villages of other (states),” said Abang Johari.
