Ismail Sabri drops defamation suit against news portal
PETALING JAYA: Bera MP Ismail Sabri Yaakob has withdrawn his defamation suit against the owner of news portal Agenda Daily, saying the suit was now academic and that proceeding with it would be a waste of time.
At the Kuala Lumpur High Court, Justice Aliza Sulaiman said the former prime minister had agreed to drop the suit with no costs and without liberty to file afresh, Berita Harian reported.
Lawyer Asiah Jalil, representing Agenda Daily owner Izwan Zubit, confirmed the matter.
Ismail later told reporters outside the courtroom that he decided to drop the case as the suit revolved around the prime minister’s post and the 15th general election in 2022.
“Since the elections are over and I’m no longer prime minister, prolonging this case would only waste the court’s time because it would all be academic,” he was quoted as saying.

Ismail’s suit involved an article titled “Ismail Sabri bimbang jadi PM paling singkat, ‘rayu’ jangan tarik sokongan” (“Ismail Sabri concerned about being the PM with the shortest tenure, ‘begs’ not to withdraw support”), which implied he had begged his Perikatan Nasional allies for their continued support.
The former Umno vice-president had named Izwan as the defendant in his capacity as the owner of Agenda Daily Media Enterprise that operates the news portal.
In the statement of claim, Ismail said the posting, in its ordinary meaning and by inference, stated that he was concerned about ending up as the prime minister with the shortest tenure in Malaysian history.
He said it was also implied that he was desperate to hold on to the office at any cost and was willing to beg a certain political party not to withdraw support for him.
He added that the posting gave the impression that he was concerned only about his position and did not care for the people.
