Other Bersatu chapters are fine, says Wan Fayhsal

PETALING JAYA: A Bersatu leader has brushed off suggestions that the party’s leadership crisis at the national level had spread to the grassroots after a division in Melaka was suspended recently.

Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal said with the exception of Melaka, the other state chapters were “okay”.

“Only (the situation in) Melaka is somewhat tense, and even so, it’s a norm for such situations to arise in political parties.

“And we will handle it internally. There’s no need for us to go public with it,” the Bersatu Youth chief told FMT when met after a forum here.

On Wednesday, Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara said the trouble brewing in the Melaka chapter could be traced back to July when Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin’s “formula” for the party elections was revealed.

Under this formula, Muhyiddin would remain at the helm of the party while the current secretary-general, Hamzah Zainudin, would take over the deputy president’s post from Ahmad Faizal Azumu, among others.

Azmi said with this formula in place, Bersatu’s grassroots were not given any chance to determine who they wanted to pick for the top five posts.

FMT reported on Monday that Melaka Bersatu chief Dr Yadzil Yaakub was facing calls to relinquish his post and allow Masjid Tanah MP Mas Ermieyati Samsudin to replace him after the Jasin division he leads was suspended last week.

Wan Fayhsal also dismissed suggestions that the party was unstable following the crisis in Melaka, and stressed that it was only limited to the management of the Jasin division.

He said the party had looked into the grouses made by members and found issues on “both sides”.

“On that basis, we temporarily suspended the Jasin division.

“We are not barring them from contesting (in the party polls), but we need to end the commotion first and clear any misunderstanding or resolve any issue which could jeopardise the whole election process in Bersatu.”
