Umno must remain humble despite Mahkota win, says Asyraf
KUALA LUMPUR: Umno’s victory in last month’s Mahkota by-election should not lead the party to become arrogant or conceited, its secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said today.
Asyraf said that while the election victory demonstrated the public’s trust in Umno, the party must ensure it continues to uphold the principles of service and good governance, as well as execute the people’s mandate with humility and integrity.
“This victory should not make Umno arrogant,” he said at a press conference after a Supreme Council meeting tonight. “We must ensure that the mandate given by the people is carried out sincerely, with the interest of the rakyat as our priority.”
Asyraf noted that Umno’s win serves as a clear indication that voters are receptive to the unity government’s approach, which avoids playing up racial or religious sentiments that could disrupt social harmony.
He added that the party will continue to strengthen its cooperation with its allies to ensure political stability and public welfare, in line with Umno’s commitment to a prosperous and harmonious Malaysia.

In a Facebook post, Asyraf also congratulated Cameron Highlands MP Ramli Nor who took his seat as the first Orang Asli member of the Supreme Council tonight.
Separately, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the party is committed to maintaining good cooperation between its partners in the unity government coalition.
He said party unity is the key to strengthening Umno in facing challenges ahead. He added that the matter was emphasised at the Supreme Council meeting.
In the Mahkota by-election, BN fielded an Umno candidate, Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah, who was elected with a majority of 20,648 votes over his rival, Haizan Jaafar from Perikatan Nasional.
In the wake of the by-election, Umno Supreme Council member Nur Jazlan Mohamed later came under fire from PKR for suggesting PH apologise for its decades-old attacks on Umno, its former adversary turned government ally.

Nur Jazlan said PH must realise from the Mahkota election that no single party in the unity government coalition could claim to be the main pillar of the alliance. He said PH could forget about staying in power without the support of Malay votes that Umno could bring.
PKR deputy information chief Razeef Rakimin said such calls showed that some Umno leaders have yet to shed their arrogant behaviour.
