Ismail Haniyeh assassinated in Tehran
Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the political bureau of the resistance Palestinian movement Hamas, has been killed in an attack in the Iranian capital, Tehran.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced on Wednesday morning that Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards were killed when their residence was hit in Tehran.
The statement said the attack is under investigation and the results will be announced later in the day.
The Palestinian resistance leader was in Tehran to attend the inauguration ceremony of the Iranian president-elect Masoud Pezeshkian.
The assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh occurred without any immediate claims of responsibility. However, Israel was quickly suspected due to their previous threats against Haniyeh and other Hamas leaders following the group’s attack on Israel on Oct. 7, which resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people and the capture of approximately 250 hostages.
At the time of his death, Haniyeh was in Tehran to witness the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday. Iranian authorities did not provide any specifics regarding the manner in which Haniyeh was killed, and the Guard stated that an investigation into the attack was underway.
On Iranian state television, analysts promptly pointed fingers at Israel for the assassination.
Israel, on the other hand, did not issue an immediate statement, which is a common practice when it comes to assassinations orchestrated by their intelligence agency, Mossad.
Israeli military declines to comment on death of Hamas political leader
The Israeli military told CNN they “don’t respond to reports in the foreign media,” after Iranian state media reported that Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in Iran.
Hamas claims it was an Israeli strike
Palestinian group Hamas said on Wednesday that an Israeli strike in Tehran has killed its chief Ismail Haniyeh.
“Brother, leader, mujahid Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the movement, died in a Zionist strike on his headquarters in Tehran after he participated in the inauguration of the new (Iranian) president,” the movement said in a statement.
