#PrkTgPiai : Vote for Jeck Seng to strengthen opposition in its role as check and balance to the govt, says Dr Wee

A stronger opposition will provide checks and balances to ensure the government delivers on its promises to the people, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

Commenting on a Pakatan Harapan statement on Saturday (Nov 2) saying that voting for the coalition’s candidate would ensure continuity of development in the area, the MCA president said such a statement implied that Pakatan had no plans to keep their promises if they lose the seat.

“If they think voters should choose Pakatan to ensure development and that only a Pakatan representative is capable of delivering, I’d say MCA’s (Datuk Seri) Dr Wee Jeck Seng is also capable of doing the same, as an opposition member.

“Since Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has said this by-election won’t change the government, then let’s send Jeck Seng to Parliament and make the opposition stronger.

“If winning or losing the by-election is not at all important to Pakatan, why vote for them and make them more brazen in ridiculing the people’s mandate?” he said during the inaugural Barisan Nasional ceramah for the Tanjung Piai by-election at Pekan Nanas here Saturday night.

Dr Wee was commenting on a joint statement by several Pakatan leaders that called on voters to cast their votes for Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s Karmaine Sardini, as a Pakatan victory is important in ensuring the parliamentary constituency’s continued development.

Together, he said, both “Wees”, comprising him and Jeck Seng, will provide a greater check and balance to the government and ensure Pakatan delivers on what they have promised.

Recalling a day of double happiness on May 30,1999, Dr Wee said both Jeck Seng and him married the loves of their lives on the same day.

“I remember that day very well – we did not invite each other to our weddings because we were busy with our own.

“People say, good things come in twos. One Wee is already in Parliament and now let’s repeat this double happiness by having another Wee there – Wee and Wee, win and win, ” he said, adding that it was necessary to have another voice of a leader from the Chinese community in the opposition.

Several top MCA leaders were also present and showed support by giving their speeches. They included party vice-president Datuk Tan Teik Cheng, secretary-general Datuk Chong Sin Woon, Wanita chief Datuk Heng Seai Kie and Youth chief Nicole Wong Siaw Ting.

Lambasting Pakatan for its incompetent governance in the past 18 months, Dr Wee, who is Ayer Hitam MP, said the government must own up to its mistakes and stop being wishy-washy in policymaking.

“The government has placed its priorities wrong, ” he said, adding that it takes a strong opposition to take the government to task over its mistakes.
