#PrkTgPiai : Policies instead of slander please, Jeck Seng tells Pakatan

Pakatan Harapan, as the government of the day, should campaign in the Tanjung Piai by-election by comparing policies instead of resorting to slander, says Barisan Nasional candidate Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng.

Wee said it was unnecessary for Pakatan to launch personal attacks against him during its campaign.

“It happens in by-elections all the time. This is called slander.

“As the government, they should have made comparisons on policies and find out ways to help the people, not slandering me.

“Why do they want to attack me? I didn’t even attack them. If I want to attack, there are many issues that I can attack on, ” he told reporters during a walkabout at Taman Nong Chik in Pontian on Friday (Nov 8).

Pakatan, as the ruling coalition, said Wee, must be responsible over the remarks made by its leaders during the by-election campaign.

“The government should have listened to the grouses of the people, instead of making their own decisions without taking into account the rakyat’s voices, ” he added.

Wee appeared unperturbed by the attacks made by DAP against him.

“I have many activities, and I have no time. Besides, I can’t make comments without accurate information. Later, my comments will become another issue.”

As the 14-day campaigning period nears the halfway point, Wee appeared to be in high spirits during the walkabout, despite the morning downpour.

He attributed his stamina to his roots as a “budak kampung”.

“Whether it’s a by-election or not, this is the way I work. Today is just another normal day. Orang kampung biasa-lah, ” he added.

During the walkabout, Wee was greeted warmly by locals having breakfast at coffee shops. One Muslim middle-aged man even approached him, calling him “peng you” (“friend” in Mandarin).

“I’m confident because I’m local, and even though I failed to defend my seat (in the last general election), I still return to my village.

“This is my village, and we have close relations with locals and residents here, ” he added.

The Tanjung Piai polls on Nov 16 will be a six-cornered fight between Pakatan’s Karmaine Sardini, Barisan’s Wee, Gerakan’s Wendy Subramaniam, Pan Malaysian Islamic Front (Berjasa)’s Badhrulhisham Abdul Aziz, and two independent candidates, Faridah Aryani Abdul Ghaffar and Ang Chuan Lock.

The by-election was triggered following the death of incumbent, 42-year-old Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Dr Md Farid Md Rafik on Sept 21.

In GE14, Dr Farid won the seat with a slim 524 vote majority against Wee and PAS candidate Nordin Othman.
